  1. Dry dusting vs Wet dusting.

    Both dry dusting and wet dusting have their own benefits and drawbacks. Dry dusting is done with a dry cloth, feather duster, or microfibre cloth (very much like our favourite Magiclean duster wipes), where as wet dusting is, well, with dusting a wet/damp cloth. When you do dry dusting, dust is very effectively collected onto the cloth, but the loose dust on the surfaces of your furniture is likely to be shaken into the air. This would probably irritate your nose, and if you are asthmatic, be extremely uncomfortable. The dust in the air will also eventually settle somewhere else. Wet dusting, while it lowers the chance of having dust fly around in the air, the moist surface that is left behind after dusting attracts even more dust. Choose between these two options, one might just work better for your home!
  2. Remove carpeting – or if you can’t, vacuum it well and often.

    Carpets collect dust, which ends up as good breeding grounds for germs and dust mites, and can be laborious to clean thoroughly. We say ditch the carpets! Or clean damn regularly enough.
  3. Remove clutter from the floor
    Dust easily settles on them even if you’re cleaning around them. Best that you put these things away where they belong, and don’t leave them lying around
  4. Wash bedding and pillows regularly
    Dead skin cells and dust get collected on your bed so it is important to wash the sheets and take care of the mattress and pillows. Throw them in the washing machine and add baking soda along with detergent.
  5. Keep the humidity levels in your home between 40-50%
    This reduces static as this is likely to attract and trap dust, making it difficult to move and leave the room. Installing a dehumidifier could be useful for some people, but proper maintenance and upkeep to prevent mould from developing is important and could be a hassle.
  6. Use air purifiers in your room.
    Some people opt for HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorption) air filter that helps clean the air in the room. Be warned that ozone is released and could really affect those people with asthma. Alternatively, choose fan-powered cleaners instead.
  7. Try to keep pets out of the bedroom.
    Their fur carries dust and pathogens from outdoors, and having them snuggle up with you on your bed is going to be really bad for your health.

Here’s a SUPER workout, combining them both, to get even better results.

  1. Sit ups – while doing the laundry

Set up your station such that your basket of clean laundry that needs folding is behind you.

When lying down flat on your back, extend your hands backwards such that you can reach out and just about grab hold of a shirt from the pile.

Take one with both hands, and begin your sit-up.


While sitting up, fold the piece of clothing with as little movement as possible apart from your hands.

Put the folded article to one side and lie back down again.

Repeat, stretch back and grab for another piece.


Continue, until you’re done.

2. Hops – while sweeping the floor

Get some cardio in with hopping while you sweep the floor.

There’s no need to rush with the hopping, or sweeping, but just do it conscientiously without cheating. sweep a bit of an area with every hop, and you’ll be done in no time!

Swap legs in different rooms so you strengthen both sides and not get one giant leg.

3. Squats – while tidying up the rooms

Tidying up the house may include putting things that are left in the wrong places, back to where they belong.

An efficient way to organise this process, is by collecting all the items that are out of place from that room and putting them into a box.

By placing this box on the floor, you are forced to squat down and retrieve the items, before getting up to put them where they are supposed to be. If you’re up for a challenge, do 5 squats each time before you put the item back in its place!

 4. Triceps, -not forgetting- doing the dishes in the kitchen

After washing the dirty dishes and pans, dry them, and train your triceps by lifting them up and down behind your head. Dip them back with your elbows bent past your neck, and raise them up again. Repeat this for 20 times, or adjust according to how many dirty plates you’ve just cleaned.

Your curtains help to frame your house. Not taking care of them might affect the overall ambience at home. Here are 2 very important things you need to know about your curtains:

  1. They are (actually) pretty dirty.

A lot of people ignore and neglect the curtains during their regular cleaning. What we don’t realise is that curtains are very good at trapping dust in the home, which can affect the health of family members, especially if they have asthma. This makes it a hotspot for germs to grow and may make you ill. Most of the time, it is sufficient to give your curtains a proper vacuum to get rid of the dust.



2. They need professional care for washing.

It’s unlikely that your curtains are going to survive a normal wash in the machine like the rest of your clothes. They need special attention. The first (and best) choice is to send it for professional cleaning. These people know exactly how to clean your curtains without damaging them. It is also probably worth the extra cost if it’s going to prevent you from having to buy new ones. Alternatively, you can try sending them for dry cleaning. This option is still a risk as incompetent companies may not be familiar with the appropriate moisture level required for unique curtain-types, which could lead to shrinking and tight creasing.

How your home smells can have an effect on the way you feel. Have a go this weekend and make your very own fragrance for your home. Choose any scent you like and adjust any of these recipes accordingly! Get creative!

  1. Stove-top potpouri

This is supposedly the best way to get the strongest smell. Depending on the size of your home, it can spread its fragrance relatively well – up to 4 rooms on the same floor. Bring up to a boil and lower down to keep the ingredients simmering on a low fire. Make sure you top up with hot water so that you don’t end up with a burnt smell when all the water evaporates. Consider using a slow-cooker or a fondue pot method as an alternative but for the same effect.

Some delicious recipes to get you started:

  1. Oranges, cinnamon & cloves in water
  2. Lemon, rosemary, & vanilla extract in water
  3. Lime, thyme, mint & vanilla extract in water
  4. Orange, ginger (fresh or powdered), & almond extract in water
  5. Pine or cedar twigs, bay leaves, and nutmeg (with the top surface layer grated)  in water

2. Bathroom bouquets



Wrap the ends of a bouquet of rosemary, lavender, and eucalyptus with twine, then hang the bunch upside down from the shower head in a spot where it won’t get directly sprayed with water. The steam from the shower will carry the aroma through the entire room.


3. Fragrance sprays


Making your own room spray can be a cheaper alternative to Febreeze, and can be sprayed in the room and on fabrics. You only need 5 ingredients:

  1. 2 tablespoons of Vodka
  2. 20 drops of Essential Oils
  3. 1 cup of Water

Decorate your spray bottles by adding dried flowers inside!

4. Reed diffuser

The last DIY project is making your own reed diffuser. This is a much cheaper alternative to buying it in stores. All you need are these 4 ingredients:

  1. 1/4 cup of Mineral oil (available in grocery and drugstores. Preferred over vegetable oil as it is less viscous and better at carrying the fragrance)
  2. 2 tbsp Vodka (unflavoured)
  3. 1/2 tbsp Essential oils (this is really up to you, stop when you get the scent you want!)
  4. Reeds, of course!

The best container/vase to use ideally has a wide base but small opening as this discourages evaporation.
